Experience in Social Issues and
Public Policy Research
Field Research has been conducting public opinion research in California and across
the nation for over 50 years. From the very start, social and public policy research
has been a major part of our wide-ranging research practice. We have undertaken many
hundreds of studies for federal, state and local government agencies, academic institutions,
non-profit organizations as well as private companies concerned with the formulation
and implementation of public policy.
We have been monitoring the California public's attitudes on issues of interest
since 1945, first through The California (Field) Poll and later through The Field
Institute, a public policy research organization we established in 1976. These data,
archived in the State's two university systems and available to researchers and scholars,
constitute a unique record of the changes in attitudes in California during the second
half of the 20th century.
Over the years, our organization has achieved a unique reputation for impartiality
and accuracy. Results of our surveys are often quoted in the national media, providing
a highly visible, ongoing test of our methods. Consequently, results of our surveys
enjoy an unmatched degree of credibility and acceptance.
We also regularly conduct public policy studies for clients in the private sector
who have a need to better understand the public's position on an issue of current
interest. Often these are situations where the company is faced with a public relations
issue and needs guidance and direction for how best to handle the situation.
